IPA-CL

Sadowsky, Scott & Gastón Salamanca. 2011. The phonetic inventory of Chilean Spanish: Guiding principles, provisional inventory of consonants and system of representation (IPA-CL). Onomázein 24 (2): 61-84. (In Spanish)

This article proposes a set of principles to guide the process of defining the segmental phonetic inventory of contemporary Chilean Spanish. It presents a provisional phonetic inventory of consonants based on the above-mentioned principles, using the Spanish spoken in the province of Concepción (Chile) as its point of reference. In addition, it presents a system for the phonetic representation of this and future inventories (IPA-CL) and proposes a research program with the goal of establishing a definitive phonetic inventory of contemporary Chilean Spanish. The long-term objective of this article is to spur research on both the theoretical and methodological issues presented here, and the selection and characterization of the phones of the provisional inventory.

IPA-CL Chart

The PDF and PNG versions of the IPA-CL chart are the best option for printing and on-line viewing, respectively. The Excel XLS version allows symbols to be copied and pasted into other documents.

All versions except the PDF and PNG ones require that you have the Charis SIL Unicode font installed in order to properly display the phonetic symbols.

IPA-CL Table

The Excel XLS version of the IPA-CL table, which includes much more information than the chart, allows symbols to be copied and pasted. Furthermore, it can be sorted by various criteria (place, manner, voice, phoneme). The PDF version is offered mainly for printing, and can be correctly viewed without having a proper phonetic font installed.
